The Danger of Over-Dissolving Fillers

The Danger of Over-Dissolving Fillers

Hyaluronic acid based injectable treatments are extremely popular, particularly when used to enhance the lips for a fuller, smoother pout. However, the rise in unqualified and inexperienced practitioners providing poor quality dermal filler treatments has led to an increase in procedures going wrong.

Additionally, we are currently seeing an increasing number of prominent figures, such as Kylie Jenner and Molly-Mae Hague, announcing that they are dissolving their fillers to embrace their natural lips.

Both of these factors are further increasing demand for filler dissolving treatments, which can provide excellent outcomes but also come with some risks that are important to understand.

Reasons For Dissolving Dermal Fillers

There are a number of reasons why you might want to dissolve dermal fillers. For example, your filler may have migrated beyond the treatment area or settled in lumps as a result of overfilling or poor placement.

Additionally, poor placement can also lead to a number of potentially much more serious issues that can cause permanent damage, which is why I always emphasise the importance of only visiting an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner for your aesthetic treatments.

Can Filler Be Safely Dissolved?

While it is possible to dissolve fillers in a safe and controlled way, it is important that your aesthetic practitioner has the skills and experience to minimise the potential risks involved with this type of procedure.

Hyaluronidase, also known as Hyalase, is a prescription product that works to dissolve hyaluronic acid based fillers. When injected into the treatment area, Hyalase targets the molecules of hyaluronic acid to break them down.

However, as is the case with all medical procedures, there are risks. Firstly, different formulations of filler respond differently to hyaluronidase when it is injected in different doses, so it is important to visit a practitioner who understands these nuances and can help you to achieve the best possible outcomes.

If filler dissolving procedures are carried out by someone without the required level of experience, Hyalase also has the potential to start breaking down healthy tissue alongside the filler, which can lead to a loss of natural lip volume, cavities and irregular texture.

Over-Dissolving Filler is Unsafe

Dissolving filler can be an excellent option for clients who want to achieve a more natural-looking appearance and can help to achieve a blank canvas that is suitable for some more subtle treatments. So, I'm certainly not implying that dissolving filler means that you can never have another dermal filler treatment.

Unfortunately, however, there is currently a trend for some clinics to engage in the process of dissolving fillers unnecessarily purely for the purpose of re-filling the same area to make more money. This is extremely dangerous and is not something that I would recommend to anyone.

How to Choose an Experienced Practitioner

Although it can be tempting simply to visit your closest practitioner, it is always worth doing your research to ensure you will receive the best possible treatments and outcomes.

Your chosen practitioner should be willing to discuss their experience with you and should be able to provide you with 'before and after' images of their past work. It is also advisable to look online for reviews from past clients, as this will help you to put together a well-rounded picture of the clinic, your potential practitioner, and the results you can expect.
