How to find the right aesthetic practitioner for you

If you have ever been drawn in by flashy advertising for cosmetic treatments presented as the latest and greatest thing on the market, or been offered aesthetic treatments for bargain prices and found yourself wondering whether they were too good to be true, then you’re certainly not alone. Too often, I see overly-complex jargon being used to subtly deceive or persuade potential clients to agree to procedures that either won’t deliver the desired results or won’t be administered in a safe environment by a professional with enough knowledge and experience to provide a first-class service.

In addition to my work as a Petersfield dentist here at The Lodge Dental Practice, I am also a qualified aesthetic practitioner and trainer at the Royal College of General Practitioners. As such, I frequently see first-hand how cosmetic treatments can improve the self-esteem of my clients and enhance their general sense of well-being.

Finding an aesthetic practitioner who is suitably experienced, makes you feel immediately at ease. Their understanding of your needs and aspirations will play a key role in helping you to achieve your ideal results. So, if you have been considering cosmetic treatments but aren’t sure where to begin your journey, here are my top tips for cutting through the jargon and ensuring that you are making fully informed choices regarding where to go and who to trust.

Safety is Paramount

The most important thing to consider when selecting an aesthetic practitioner is safety. You need to know that your treatment will be carried out by a qualified and experienced professional in a clean, safe environment.

Let's take anti-wrinkle injections as an example here. In recent years, injectables have become a very popular cosmetic treatment and their popularity has resulted in a proliferation of so-called “anti ageing parties”. There are myriad risks associated with undergoing an injectable procedure in a non-clinical environment and although in some cases you might pay less than you would in a clinic with a first-class reputation, the consequences of any mistakes can be costly both financially and emotionally.

Knowledge is Power

In addition to feeling relaxed and safe, it is important that you feel your practitioner has supplied you with all the information you need to know to make the right choices. Importantly, this information should be delivered with a no-pressure approach.

During your initial consultation, your practitioner should encourage you to ask as many questions as you need to and provide a safe space in which you feel free to voice any concerns or worries you might have. If at any point you feel rushed or uncomfortable, I recommend arranging a consultation with a different practitioner at a different clinic until you find someone you trust.

Qualifications and Accreditations

Your chosen practitioner should have the skills and knowledge to carry out your chosen procedure. In addition to asking to see evidence of their qualifications, I always recommend requesting to see visual examples of procedures they have carried out in the past and the results they obtained.

It is also worth noting that when researching clinics and practitioners, looking for reviews on Facebook, Google and their website is often an excellent starting point. Remember, happy clients are as likely to want to share their experiences online as clients who perhaps haven't had a particularly positive experience and this can be extraordinarily helpful at pointing you in the right direction of a professional and welcoming clinic.
